SHORTAGE OF DENTISTS BRINGS OPPORTUNITIES FOR BRAZILIAN IMMIGRANTS

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), there are only 60 dentists per 100,000 residents in the U.S. The shortage of dentists has intensified in the last two years when many professionals have retired, and few dentists have graduated and joined the U.S. labor market, primarily due to the pandemic.

On the other hand, Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of dentists on the planet; According to the Brazilian Federal Council of Dentistry, there are 140 dentists per 100,000 inhabitants. That is more than double when compared to the U.S. The above-average qualification of Brazilian dentists is a key factor in helping them achieve great work opportunities in America.

“The current Administration of the United States has shown great interest in attracting skilled immigrants. More than 300,000 green cards have been made available in the fiscal year 2022 for the most diverse immigration categories. The amount is a new record and can benefit many Brazilian dentists who dream of living and working in the U.S.,” – according to Immigration lawyer Marcelo Gondim.

To attract qualified foreign professionals, the U.S. government created the “EB” (Employment-Based) categories, aimed at people who have successful careers in their home countries and/or advanced academic background (at least one bachelor’s degree and five more years of progressive post-bachelor’s work). These green card categories can also benefit entrepreneurs who want to invest and create businesses in the U.S.

“A dentist’s average annual salary in the U.S.  is around $158,000 to $208,000, making the profession one of the highest-paid in the country. Brazilian dentists who want to take advantage of their academic background and professional experience to move to the U.S. will come across a job market with many opportunities. – Noted Marcelo, who founded Gondim Law Corp, an immigration law office based in Los Angeles representing thousands of clients in their immigration processes to the U.S.

In addition to the immigration process, foreign dentists must obtain a license to practice in the United States. Most U.S. states require a degree from a dental education program accredited by the American Dental Association (CODA). “The first step is to obtain the

school history and diploma from the educational institutions the professional has attended in Brazil. The documents need to be authenticated and translated by a sworn translator,”- noted Marcelo. Concludes Marcelo.
